2 Minute Moment #3

  1. Mark- From your project I can easily understand that advising means a lot to you. You must take great pride in working with students to set realistic and achievable goals. As I was watching your video, I began to make connections in my mind with things I do as a teacher in my own classroom. Many of the elements of a quality advising session are also elements used to help students in my class attain success. Being a support system as well as an advocate is a big part of both jobs. Again, nice work! ~ Leah

  2. I feel like I get a very good sense of what good advising consists of, and the photographs helped illuminate all the positive aspects of good advising. But I'm left wondering, what does it mean to *you*? What makes it exciting for *you*? What brings you back to the international student office everyday?

  3. I really liked how you described the difference between advising that is not compelling versus advising that is compelling. As I was watching, I felt as though you were describing what makes advising compelling for the advisees. I would be curious to know what makes it compelling for you as the advisor. Or what do you do to make advising compelling for yourself? In any case, speaking from a student's perspective, I can definitely the effort that you are making to try and make sure your advisees get what they need to out of your program.

  4. Cecily and Kevin,

Thank you for challenging my thinking:)
I think the different components that makes advising more compelling to me are somehow similar to what is in my video. For instance, I do feel a sense of pride and reward when I advocate and empower my students. I experience the great feeling for giving back to the college student community, thinking that I am contributing to resilience and retention in college.
